Since digital TV signals can be compressed it became possible to carry more channel in the same amount of space used by analog sd signals. Set top boxes works like a decoder in which it translate digital signal received and pass it along to you digital tv or analog tv or other display devices. Set top boxes can have hd broadcasts or sd broadcasts.

Linux set top boxes are also available which runs the linux operating system. Usually one or more processor is used as required. The operating system is not limited to linux, it can be Windows, Power TV,JavaOS or others. Other chips are also present for decoding and processing.

Digital set top boxes are easy to install and use, connect it to you tv set using a composite or S-Video component cable, it then scans for availble signals and displays it to your TV.

The cost of digital set top boxes vary depending on the feature set. Even if there is not much hd signal, it is much better to get an hd set top box as there are hd signal being added and converted. A number of set top boxes are also available for PCs and even notebook computers.

Set top box used in IPTV are computers smaller in scale with a connection to any streaming source. The connection can h2be through ethernet or existing local area network.
